It looks as though old Grapes isn’t throwing in the towel just yet. Canadian icon Don Cherry confirmed via Twitter on Sunday evening that he would be returning to Hockey Night in Canada this season, despite previous reports that he would not be back to host during the 2019-20 season. Cherry’s alleged departure was initially reported by Steve Simmons of The Toronto Sun, who wrote this past weekend in his Sunday column that the 85-year-old would not be returning. “One thing that hasn’t been confirmed for the next season of Hockey Night In Canada: the return of Don Cherry and Coach’s Corner," wrote Simmons in his column. "Rogers is cutting all over the place, which included the removal of Bob McCown on radio and television and Doug MacLean doing the same. Cherry is handsomely compensated for his work. Not sure if this is a place, they want to go with the 85-year-old". Cherry himself responded to Simmons' claim, saying that he was “hurt” by the journalist’s assumption that he wasn't going to be invited back this season. 1) I must say I am hurt and disappointed that my friend Steve Simmons would suggest in his Sunday column that Hockey Night in Canada might not want me back for next year. I was told a week after the playoffs I would be back.— Don Cherry (@CoachsCornerDC) July 8, 2019 He also called out Simmons in a following tweet for not asking him directly about his return. "The question I ask is this… why didn’t my friend Steve phone me and ask me?", he wrote. Hockey fan reactions to the news were about as mixed as they get, with some glad to have Cherry back and others openly dreading his return. Love Don Cherry. He’s says it like it is. Not afraid to say what the fans feel.— mike schaetzer (@mikes1519) July 8, 2019 Like the world is still run by rich old white men. Time for a change.— Omar Abdelgawad (@Tiberious_Nero) July 8, 2019 Embarrassing. Grow up, HNIC.— Greg M (@mygrog) July 8, 2019 Don = Canada. Right on 👍🏼— Jason Zelmer (@zelmerj) July 8, 2019 Good stuff pic.twitter.com/xnE69Q9J0V— Marc SWISS Lang (@swissrules69) July 8, 2019 He is Hockey Night in Canada— AKA CurtDogg (@CurtisChristl) July 8, 2019 Incredibly disappointed that you won’t get rid of him.— Murray Campbell (@murraykcampbell) July 8, 2019 It’s not Coaches Corner without Cherry. Like him or not. 😉— Dave Mason🇨🇦 (@tweetsinpajamas) July 8, 2019 He gets on my nerves at times but, it wouldn’t be Hockey Night without him.— Maria S (@siciliangirl91) July 8, 2019 Time to put the guy out to pasture. I change the channel every time he comes on tv now. I have no interest in listening to anything he has to say anymore— Tnert (@trentum75) July 8, 2019 Like another year of the mute button being an absolutely necessity.— EJ (@emilyjomichele) July 8, 2019 Love or hate him, it doesn’t like Don Cherry is planning on going anywhere just yet, and with the recent loss of Kawhi Leonard, it’s nice to see that at least one legend is sticking around.
